Parallel to Earth a nameless world lurks: a dark inversion, home to monsters, connected only by fleeting rifts in space and time. Tristin, a plucky teen, finds herself trapped in this land of monsters after a treasure hunt gone wrong. Unable to return home, Tristin enters the care of Mara — a grumpy recluse with strange powers and a stranger past. Between giant house cats, masquerade balls, and a mysterious man with malevolent motives, the cards seem stacked against this odd couple as they try to make the best of a less than ideal situation.
